MAY QUESTIONS
Roses Q. What kind of roses do well here and when are they available?

A. Roses- Colorado has a lot of sunshine and roses thrive on it, doing very well here. We have many different shrub roses available year around. In mid-May our supply of Hybrid Teas and Climbers will arrive, being available then through the summer. We also carry Meidlands and Simplicities throughout the summer. Our selection of Hybrid Teas will consist of 5-10 of the old standbys and 5-10 new varieties. We usually have about 5 Climbers to choose from and about 20 tried and true shrub roses.

Annuals Q. When can I start planting my annual flowers?

A. Annuals-This area’s average last day of frost is May 15. Planting in early June is usually safe, however annuals are an inexpensive investment and if the weather appears nice enough earlier, give it a try. Covering with a sheet when frost threatens or even replacing some of your flowers is usually worth it. Annual flowers usually become available in late April, depending on weather and how the seedlings are doing at the grower’s.

Vegetable Garden Q. When do I plant my vegetable garden here?

A. Vegetables-Most vegetables like to have relatively warm nights (50 degrees F.) that don’t show up around here until early to mid June. Some vegetables like cool nights however and should be planted early to mid May – Peas, Broccoli, Radish, Spinach and Cabbage. If this makes for too short of a season for your favorite vegetable you can put it out a couple of weeks early by using black plastic on the soil surface and walls-of-water around the plants themselves.
