FEBRUARY QUESTIONS
Bulbs Q. When should I plant tulips and daffodils?

A. Bulbs-Unfortunately we get this question every year in late winter. Fall is the time to plant bulbs such as tulips and daffodils, it is too late in February or March. They will no longer be available at this time. If you happen to buy some potted up for spring color you can put them out in the garden when they finish blooming and they should come back for you the following spring.

Pointsettia Q. My Poinsettia is starting to decline, what do I do to get it to come back and bloom again next Christmas?

A. Poinsettia Care-Poinsettias need a sunny window, constant temperatures (free from drafts and never below 55 degrees), and kept moist to prolong blooming. Cut back and place outdoors in May, fertilize weekly and water regularly. Repot and bring back indoors in late August. To get it to bloom again it must have 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness daily for 8 weeks. Putting into an unused closet at 4-5:00 each evening and out again at about 7:AM should do the job. The flowers will appear 3-6 weeks later.

Spraying Q. My neighbor is out spraying his trees and shrubs with something, what could it be at this time of the year?

A. Dormant Oil Spraying-Your neighbor is likely using a dormant oil to control scale insects, red spider mites, mealybugs and other garden pests. Dormant Oil is a petroleum oil that coats the stem and trunk surfaces smothering eggs, nymphs & adults alike. It should be applied in late winter or early summer to anything that has a regular pest problem that may need some prevention, such as fruit trees.
